If you are starting your Somali language learning journey, you might find this post useful! Here are some commonly used verbs in English, translated into Somali.
A verb is a type of word conveying an action (Xassan ate with his sister, Farhixa drives her kids to school).
In Somali, the most simplest form of a verb is when it is used as an imperative (eg. go eat, just wait!). In other languages, it might be the infinitive (eg. salir, comer – Spanish) or like in Arabic, when the verb is conjugated (eg. خرج – he went out).
Having explained all of that, here is my list to help you! 5 verbs, with an example sentence. If I am aware of any dialectal differences, I have included that as well.
1. Cun – Eat
Xasan wuxuu la cunay Farxiyo. Hassan ate with Farhiya.
2. Cab – Drink
Fadlan biyaha cab! Please drink the water.
3. Tag/Teg/Aad – Go
Maalin kasta, masaajidka ayaan tagaa. Each day, I go to the mosque.
4. Sheeg – Tell
Ha ii sheegin! Don’t tell me!
5. Aqri/Akhri – Read
Subaxdii buugayga waan aqriyaa. I read my book in the morning.
That’s it for now but hope it helps! 🙂 Good luck with your language studies.
