Before we get started, let’s recap the words day, today,yesterday, tomorrow, week, month and year in Somali

Day – Maalin

Today – Maanta

Yesterday – Shalay

Last night – Xalay

Tomorrow – Berrito

Week – Toddobaad

Month – Bil

Year – Sanad


Days of the Week

The days of the week in Somali are derived from Arabic. Friday and Saturday come from the words Al-Jumuah (Friday prayer) and As-Sabt (Sabbath) but from Sunday to Thursday, the names come from the Arabic letters 1 to 5 and is adapted to Somali pronunciation.

Fridayjimco (day of the Friday prayer)

Saturdaysabti (sabbath day)
